2022 - ARTER

Candeger Furtun

One of the important values of Contemporary Turkish Ceramic Art, Candeğer Furtun's first retrospective exhibition covering after 1960 has been meeting with the audience for a while at ARTER. I recently had the opportunity to visit the exhibition in ARTER's spacious, simple and serene space.

In the exhibition, it is possible to find original works of Candeğer Furtun, from his functional and decorative works in his early works, which reveal the relations he established between nature and the human body, which have become abstract over time, with ceramics. In Furtun's works, the archeology and history of the lands he lived in, the reflections of the social and political events of the period, and his abstract works with a timeless and spaceless appearance are observed together.

Apart from his impressive works such as the 'Faces' and 'Back' series, which reveal the bond between a leaf and the human body, and the 'Hands' and 'Legs', which establish the relationship between the shell and the skin, one of the ones that impressed me the most in the exhibition; the exhibition offered the opportunity to enter Furtun's workshop. The handwritten notebooks, test plates, patterns, sketches of colors, mud and glazes that he created by experimenting with raw materials without using any ready-made paint in his artistic life… It is very valuable to witness these on the occasion of this exhibition.
